February Meeting Minutes

The club is planning a trip to the Colorado Bend State park trails on April 22, Earth Day. It looks to be about a 3.5hour drive, we’ll find a place to camp, hang out, ride ride ride!

A couple weeks ago, GHORBA hosted a group ride at Cameron Park in Waco. It was some seriously fun riding where a few Waco group leaders even showed off their secret trails. Not too much blood was spilled and only a handful of flat tires…

This Saturday will be trail maintenance out at the lake. 8am as usual. After the storms this past week there will likely be a lot of deadfall that will need cleared. We will also be taking down the arrows from PowePedal that are confusing folks on the trail. Remember if you are new to the area to print off a trail map to stick in your jersey pocket as there are a number of intersections that could potentially run you in circles.

If you haven’t figured out already, we’ve made a HUGE website update! It is live and running and the club officers have been having a lot of fun with it. We want club members to be able to contribute as well. Tell us about your camping trips, how your races went, what the Lake Bryan trail conditions are like. Please keep the quantity of flat tires you’ve received through ‘flat tire alley’ to yourself though…we don’t want to scare away potential visitors – nah, you could share that. Keep your eyes open for Username and Password information arriving in your inbox soon.

Gina, Mike, Joel, JP, and maybe John are all headed to Lajitas, TX next weekend (Feb. 17-19) for the Chihuahuan Desert Dirt Fest. My guess would be that it is going to be AWESOME. There is talk that there is room for one more person who would get to squeeze between Joel and JP…

The Big Event is happening on March 24th here in College Station. What the heck is The Big Event? It is where students give back to the community. Gina has submitted an application for us to get 20-40 students out to Lake Bryan to help us move bridges, dirt, gravel, or anything else we can think of. Think manual labor!

JP and Victor did Terra Firma’s Dirty Dozen 12hour mountain bike race this past weekend as a team and scored a thoroughly impressive 3rd place. Keep posted for JPs race report.

Ali and Kim were there to volunteer as backup time keepers for the solo riders. The rainy/windy/muddy conditions kept the electronic timing from functioning consistently so… long live pen and paper!

Great job this weekend everyone.

Lake Bryan Lake passes are handed out to the top volunteers for the year. Who shall be the lucky ones????

Joel presented some trail sign ideas that featured a cyclist, hiker, arrow, section name, and “Main Loop.” As temporary signage by the teeter-totter and a few other confusing places, the club agreed that this would be a good addition. We are looking into grants from IMBA and possibly some funding from BTU about getting some more permanent signage that would mark the trail clearly and withstand this Texas weather.

attendees: Emily, Gina, JP, Travis, Mike, Kim, Ali, Joel, Jonathan (new!), John Flynn
