On the banks of the Rio Grande!

Most of us left College Station on Tuesday and started the 10 hour drive to Lajitas in Very cold weather. There were was a large ice storm west of Austin and temperatures fell to 25 F at one point. This made for difficult driving conditions and did not bode well for a camping trip.

Icicles on our bicycles!

Luckily the temperature in Lajitas was slightly higher and it was dry. The weather for the rest of the trip was fantastic with dry trails, sunshine, and temperatures in the 70s during the day. We all had a great time riding the awesome flowy trails in Lajitas, the rocky climbs and descents of Big Bend Ranch State Park, and the awesome scenery of Big Bend National Park. Four club members rode the awesome 60 mile IMBA Epic ride in the State Park and lived to tell the tale!

The Crystal Trail!

As well as some great riding there was also a lot of delicious food to be had! Highlights included the 1 pound Diego burgers complete with 2 fried eggs and bacon at the Starlight Theater and Gina’s Fajita feast on Saturday night!

On Sunday we retuned to College Station with dirty bikes, sore legs, and big smiles. Now we are all counting down the days until next year’s event!

Millican Reserve

Justin and Victor met with Johnny from the Millican Reserve. They reminded us that riding there is strictly limited to BVMBA members who have signed a waiver. The Millican Reserve will not allow non-BVMBA members to ride there. The club has cut around 7.3 miles of trails and James is planning more. During the meeting various ways to identify members such as membership cards were discussed. They also wanted to make sure that we know that before trails are cut we need their approval. They would like to liaise with horse riders who also use the trials. The need for trailhead signs saying that non-members cannot ride was also discussed. There have been problems with cows encroaching on the trails. The plan is for the cows to be moved to other area of the Reserve. They are now open to the idea of night riding but we need to check with them regarding which times we can ride.

There will be a Farmer’s Market on the 16th February and a Mud Run on the 22nd February.

Trail maintenance

We will meet at the Millican Reserve on Saturday 8th February at 9 am by the horse arena.

Dirty Dozen

Several teams from the BVMBA raced at the Dirty Dozen 12 hour Race last weekend. There was not too much rain and everyone had a great time. Kim and Ali raced in the 2-person open men’s laps as there were no women’s teams for them to compete with. The put in a very impressive 16 laps. Joel raced solo and had to stop early due to a knee injury put in a creditable 5 laps. Justin, Collin, and Travis raced as a 3-person team and did 14 laps.

Trail closures

BTU has several ongoing projects that are going to affect the mountain bike trails at Lake Bryan. We are working with BTU to try to keep the trails open as much as possible during this process but there will be some disruption to trails. Early next year they will be installing a sanitary sewer along the bottom of the levee on the east side of the lake. During this time all the East Loop trails will be closed. When we allowed back on this side of the lake, a lot of work will be needed to reroute the trails before they can be ridden again.

In the near future several oil well pads will be installed around both sides of the lake. Unfortunately, while this going all the mountain bike trails will be closed. Once the oil wells have been installed we will be allowed access to the lake but again a lot of work will be needed to reroute the trails before they can be ridden.

Trail maintenance

We will focus on the West Loop at the session on Saturday 9th November. General trail tidying and removal of deadfall is needed.

Millican Reserve

We will meet with representatives from Millican Reserve in the near future to discuss the locations on which we can build new trails.

High School MTB Team

John F. announced that the High School MTB team is going from success to success and will grow again this year. There will be at least 15 athletes, 5 of which will be female, all grades will represented, and they will come from College Station High School and Texas A&M University Consolidated High School. The team will need a donation to help fund their races again this year. This could come from the club or individual members.

Trips

The planned camping trip this weekend was cancelled due to bad weather. James and his brother have a trip to Arkansas planned this weekend (8-10th November) and they are looking for people to joining them.

Group rides

All group ride will be moved back to 6.30pm now the clocks have gone back.
